On the last Saturday in August, politicos and socialites trade titbits of gossip and sips of Pimm's under the tasteful bunting of a Richmond garden party. They'd never guess that the police are just a stone's throw away, pulling a body out of the river Thames.

Detective Caius Beauchamp is at the theatre, trying to get a little culture. His hopes for the evening are dashed when a fellow audience member is found dead in his seat. Caius jumps into action to identify the body. Is it possible that this death could be linked to a drowning the week before?
