The Fell by Sarah Moss

Remind yourself of the tensions and claustrophobia of the first winter of the Coronavirus pandemic with this short, excellent novel by Sarah Moss. The Fell is set in the Peak District. Kate and her 16 year old son, Matt, are self-isolating after Kate is identified as a close contact of a work colleague with Covid. Alice, their neighbour, is cocooning and irritated by her “Extremely Vulnerable” status. All are struggling with confinement and isolation. Kate decides to break the isolation curfew by going for a walk late one evening which results in an accident and a mountain rescue operation. As Kate battles to survive the night, she’s already wondering whether she will survive a potential £10,000 fine for breaking the rules. Much to remember and ruminate over in this Pandemic-inspired novel.
